What is Gua Sha and Cupping?

Gua Sha (gwa' sha') has the effect of deep tissue bodywork without all the effort while using the correct tool for the person's condition. Release of metabolic waste occurs in between muscle fibers, releasing layers of stagnation while moving in a direction specifically applied to remove toxic waste that has built up between the muscle fibers, typically for many years.

Gua Sha addresses issues of toxicity, stagnation, and knots or spasms which untreated becomes known as “muscle crepitus” a hardened gristle-like stagnation in and around the muscle fibers, and which affects mobility.

"Muscle Crepitus" is characterized by knots and chronic spasms of the muscle fibers due to the accumulation of metabolic waste. It often manifests as pain or numbness in the lower and upper back and neck, or other armored muscle groups affecting a limited range of motion.

With Gua Sha, the removal of these intramuscular toxins can be addressed, with most people noticing an immediate increased range of motion and decreased contraction and pain. We recommend following such treatment people soak in hot salt water for 20-25 minutes within 12 hours to continue the discharge of "Sha" liberated from muscles.

Usually, three sessions are indicated a week or so apart, depending on how the individual localizes their stress or continues to do so. A hot salt bath soaking for 20-25 minutes is recommended within the day following Gua Sha therapy. Some people have this procedure done regularly to continue releasing and preventing the build-up of the "Sha" within the muscles

Cupping involves the use of thick, round glass cups that create a vacuum inside the cup while positioning it against the affected skin and muscle tissue areas. The suction this produces draws out the Sha and relaxes the muscle especially where attachments are while facilitating a greater range of motion. Cupping, as a technique, has been administered in every country and culture along the Silk Road trade route for the past 2500 years from China to Europe.
